How to Dress for Church: Important Considerations
Jan 25th 2023
Dressing your best for church services is a matter of the utmost importance. It’s where we get the expression “Sunday Best!” The women’s clergy dresses, or men’s church suits or shirts you choose, can make a big impact on your image of professionalism and reverence.
So, we’ve gone ahead and compiled a list of pointers for both men and women, by season, for how to look your best when dressing for church services.
For the Gents
First, it’s important to consider the type of church you’ll be attending. Some churches have a more formal dress code than others, so it’s important to take this into account when choosing your outfit. If in doubt, it’s better to err on the side of being overdressed than underdressed.
For a more formal church service, men should opt for a suit and tie. A dark-colored suit in navy, black, or gray is usually the best choice. A white dress shirt should be worn underneath the suit jacket and a coordinating tie should be chosen. A pocket square can also be added for an extra touch of sophistication.
If the church service is less formal, men can opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. Choose a shirt in a solid color, such as white, blue, or gray. The trousers should be in a coordinating color, such as navy or black. A belt should be worn to complete the look.
In addition to the basics, there are a few extra items men can consider when dressing for church. A blazer can be worn over a shirt and trousers for a more polished look. A vest can also be added for a touch of style. Shoes should be chosen carefully; loafers or dress shoes are the best options.
Finally, men should pay attention to the accessories they choose. A watch can be worn to add a touch of sophistication. A belt should be chosen to match the shoes. A pocket square can also be worn with a suit.
For the Ladies
First, it’s important to be mindful of the length of your clothing. Skirts and dresses should be long enough to cover your knees, and shorts should be avoided. This doesn’t mean that you have to wear long, frumpy dresses—there are plenty of stylish and flattering options that still meet the dress code. If you’re looking for something a bit more modern, try a maxi skirt or a midi dress.
Next, think about the fabric of your clothing. Many churches prefer fabrics like cotton, linen, and polyester, as they are more modest and professional.
When it comes to colors, it’s usually best to stick to neutral shades like black, white, gray, and navy. Bright colors and patterns can be distracting, so it’s best to avoid them. However, if you’re attending a more casual service, you may be able to get away with wearing brighter colors and prints.
Finally, think about the details of your outfit. Avoid clothing with too many embellishments, like sequins, rhinestones, and beading. It’s also best to avoid clothing with plunging necklines or low-cut backs. If you’re wearing a sleeveless dress or top, it should be accompanied by a cardigan or jacket to ensure that you’re covered up.
Time of Year
It’s also important to dress appropriately for the season. Just as the clergymen and women themselves do when attending to the unique significance of each portion of the liturgical calendar, so too can you. Here are some pointers, for both ladies and gentlemen.
Spring
As the weather starts to warm up, you can start to transition away from heavier fabrics and darker colors. Look for lightweight fabrics like linen and cotton in subtle pastel shades. If you’re attending a formal service, you can opt for a traditional suit in a light gray or navy. For a more casual look, try pairing a white or light-colored dress shirt with chinos or khakis and dress shoes.
Summer
During the summer months, you’ll want to focus on breathable fabrics like linen and seersucker that won’t be too warm. For a formal service, try a traditional suit in a light gray or navy. For a more casual look, you can opt for dress shorts or chinos paired with a polo shirt or a light-colored dress shirt and dress shoes.
Fall
As the weather starts to cool down, you can start to transition back to heavier fabrics like wool and tweed. For a formal service, you can opt for a traditional suit in navy or charcoal. For a more casual look, try pairing a dark-colored dress shirt with chinos or khakis and dress shoes.
Winter
During the winter months, you’ll want to focus on heavier fabrics like wool and tweed. For a formal service, try a traditional suit in navy or charcoal. For a more casual look, you can opt for dress pants or chinos paired with a dark-colored dress shirt and dress shoes.
